Watford Make a Praiseworthy Comeback

Last time Tony Hudd and I visited Vicarage Road on December 9 the club was facing administration and the Russo brothers were asking for the return of their £5.5m loan. We asked them to provide a temporary press box in the middle of the condemned stand after Chris Davies, a former chairman, and others were soaked in the rain while sitting in the existing box on scaffolding close to the trackside. Vince Russo, the then vice chairman, wondered whether the FWA could contribute to the cost. We couldn't but fortunately the Russos were paid up - by Lord Ashcroft of non dom fame - and Graham Taylor took over as chairman until the end of the season. I contacted Graham and asked if he could carry out the original promise and he passed the message on to CEO Julian Winter. Next day Julian rang to say the matter was back on the agenda.

On March 13 I went back to Vicarage Road and was very impressed by the three rows of 13 spacious seats to the left of the halfway line, the new facility. There was a moderately large size screen TV, individual lights and power points and Leigh Brooks, the Head of Marketing and her assistant Emily are obviously trying to recreate the family approach which Graham introduced many years ago. Inside the condemned stand the two press rooms certainly came up to the standard which the Football League will make compulsory at the end of the 2011-2 season. A hot meal was provided with hot and cold drinks and at half time there were several types of cake.

The existing box on the gantry is still being used by radio and if the rest of the redevelopment - a planned 150 flats are part of it - is given the kiss of life by Ashcroft's cash we could, in a year or two, be sitting in a properly designed box in the new stand. So well done Watford!
